In this first post or our "Meet the Team" series, we'd like to introduce Art, one of our amazing warehouse person / delivery driver. It's a testament to both Art and merchants.ca that he has been with us for more than three decades!

Says Art...

Thirty-five years ago, my job was not consistent enough to provide for a young family. Nelson Soulliere, the General Manager of merchants.ca at the time, welcomed me into his office, removed his cigar (it was a different time), and asked me why I wanted to work here. 

I explained that the job I had was not stable and I wanted and needed a change. 

He said, "I guarantee you that you will never be laid off here. I consider it my personal responsibility to my employees and their families to keep them all gainfully employed." 

He was true to his word, and I soon learned that this was the philosophy embraced by owner Carl, which no doubt he had gleaned from his parents, founders Charlie and Ethel, and which he has passed on to his son Allan, current owner, three generations in. 

Loyalty, respect and passion are key to MPC's success, along with continually seeking to improve all the many workings of the company. In a competitive market, this company shines by combining putting people first with attention to ensuring that we are competitive and devoted to satisfying our customers' needs with politeness, respect and good humour. 

I know I am in a minority among the broader workforce in the community in being blessed to say that I truly enjoy my job, the environment I work in, and especially the people I am fortunate to call coworkers and friends. My passions both in serving my customers and in the wider community are to bring out the best in the people I meet, helping them to become the best versions of themselves. 

Whether delivering to our customers, interacting with coworkers and management, or at home, church, store, or just relaxing with a book on the porch, I always try to bring a smile to those I encounter and provide them with a listening ear, a smile, and words of encouragement or consolation as I see a need. 

I truly love the people I work with, deliver to, encounter and serve in my many ministries in the community. God has blessed me richly and I try to pass it on.
