Flexible Work Arrangements: A Win-Win for Women and Employers

Flexible work arrangements (FWAs) are a type of work arrangement that allows employees to have more control over their work hours, location, and/or responsibilities. FWAs can be a great way for women to balance their work and family responsibilities, and they can also be beneficial for employers, as they can lead to increased productivity, employee satisfaction, and reduced turnover.

According to the 2015 Employee Job Satisfaction and Engagement report from SHRM, 55% of employees cited the flexibility to balance work and life issues as a very important aspect of their job satisfaction, an increase of 10 percentage points from the previous year. One of the top
reasons these employees indicated they would be unlikely or very unlikely to look for a new position outside of their organization in the next year was the workplace flexibility offered by their organization (42%).

There are many different types of FWAs, some of the most common include:

  • Telecommuting: This is when employees work from home or from a remote location.
  • Flextime: This is when employees have the flexibility to set their own work hours, within certain limits.
  • Compressed workweeks: This is when employees work longer hours on fewer days, such as four 10-hour days.
  • Job sharing: This is when two or more employees share a single job.

FWAs can be beneficial for both employees and employers. For employees, FWAs can offer a number of benefits, including:

  • Improved work-life balance: FWAs can help employees to better balance their work and family responsibilities.
  • Reduced stress: FWAs can help to reduce stress levels, which can lead to improved health and well-being.
  • Increased productivity: FWAs can lead to increased productivity, as employees are often more motivated and engaged when they have more control over their work.
  • Reduced turnover: FWAs can help to reduce turnover, as employees are less likely to leave a job if they have the flexibility to meet their needs.

For employers, FWAs can offer a number of benefits, including:

  • Increased productivity: As mentioned above, FWAs can lead to increased productivity.
  • Reduced costs: FWAs can reduce costs, such as office space and travel expenses.
  • Improved employee morale: FWAs can help to improve employee morale, which can lead to a more positive work environment.
  • Attracting and retaining top talent: FWAs can help to attract and retain top talent, as employees are more likely to choose a job that offers flexibility.

FWAs can be a great way to find a job that meets your needs and helps you to succeed in your career. Flexible work arrangements can be a great way for women to balance their work and family responsibilities. They can also be beneficial for employers, as they can lead to increased productivity, employee satisfaction, and reduced turnover. If you are a woman who is looking for a job, be sure to ask about the company's FWA policies.
