According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation website, a circular economy is:

"...a system where materials never become waste and nature is regenerated. In a circular economy, products and materials are kept in circulation through processes like maintenance, reuse, refurbishment, remanufacture, recycling, and composting. The circular economy tackles climate change and other global challenges, like biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution, by decoupling economic activity from the consumption of finite resources."

Pioneering the Circular Economy

Ellen MacArthur is a former professional sailor who gained international recognition for her solo circumnavigation of the globe. While circling the globe carrying everything she needed with her, she gained new insights as to how the world works, how it is interconnected, and how it its future is impacted by finite resources and the decisions we make today.

When she returned, she began a new journey—committing to understanding how the economy works and finding solutions to how we make energy and use materials.
